News

2011

  • January we had 1 Search in Kimbolton.
  • February   callout   for   missing  person
  • On the evening of Wednesday 18th May, nine members of Branch 20 attended a Search and Rescue Communications Training session run by Andy Brooke, the SAR Co-ordinator for our region.

A large number of the searchers associated with SAR also attended.

John Yaldwin from LandSAR, and AREC opened the night with a 30 minute talk on SAR communications, including an overview of the new ICOM handheld which is being distributed nationwide.

Andy then split the searchers into 4 teams and sent them out into the streets of Palmerston North with a VHF radio, an HF radio, A GPS and a sheet of instructions.

It was not long before the radio checks started coming in through both VHF and HF, and soon after messages started flowing both inwards and outwards.

These training sessions are held once a year and it is a good opportunity for both operators and searchers to ‘have a go’ without the stress of a real search, and to discuss the way things are done.

If you are interested in assisting with searches in our region contact
